ERP for small business: what it is, and when you really need one

ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) sounds like something for giant companies, and originally that is what it was: heavy, expensive systems that run finance, stock, purchasing and HR in large organisations. But the need itself exists in a three-person business too.

What an ERP does

Put simply, an ERP is where the business runs itself:

  • Finance: invoices, income, expenses and collections.
  • Work: tasks, projects and schedules.
  • Team: who does what, attendance and permissions.

Why the big systems don't fit a small business

  • Complicated: dozens of screens and settings, and a rollout that takes months.
  • Expensive: licences, consultants and add-ons.
  • They don't talk to customers: the ERP knows what is happening in finance, but not what is happening on WhatsApp.

What a small business really needs

Not a full ERP, but its core, connected to the rest of the business:

  1. Invoices and collections connected to bookkeeping.
  2. Tasks and projects the team can see.
  3. One view of the money: how much came in, how much is pending, from whom.
  4. Most important: all of it connected to customers. A deal closed in the CRM should show up in finance on its own.

ERP and CRM: why separate them at all?

The split between CRM and ERP is historical, not logical. It was born when each system was built separately. A small business doesn't need two systems trying to talk to each other. It needs one operating system for the business. More in CRM, ERP and AI agents in one system, and in the guide CRM for small business.

ERP in E26

In E26, running the business (invoices, payments, collections, income and expenses, tasks, projects and attendance) sits in the same system as your customers and AI agents. See pricing or book an intro meeting.
